Folks i have a probably simple and newbie question here, i am no car expert but wanting to learn more.

I have a question about the turbo and rpms, i feel the turbo kicking in at about 3 rpm, when driving round town i tend to find myself in 4th or 5th gear at about 2.5 rpm, when i open her up and hit 70 on motorway the rpm's are up at about 3.5 / 4 rpms, my questions are, is this normal for the RA? I take it the turbo is on permenantly with the car running at 4rpm. Is this the nature of the beast with the RA ?

the car is completly standard

thanks

Hi mate,

At 4k you will be "on boost" ie: turbo spinning.

If you floor it from low revs in high gear you will feel the lag until the turbo kicks in.

That's turbo lag.

4.111 final drive means that in 5th gear @ 4000 RPM you'll be doing about 80mph.

Have a look at this.

Malcolm - looks like oyu had better attend the Monthly meet in Aberdeen on Tuesday so we can sit down and run through " all the usual RA questions" in one sitting!

It's good fun finding out SS. I've asked most of the questions and will try and point you in the direction of some answers when I can.

Are you enjoying the car? Any niggles or gripes?

I am enjoying the car, i love the acceleration of the ra, its different compared to other scoobies i have test driven, like i say i am new to the world of the impreza, but been a long time admirer, its only recently i have been able to afford one (and i am not sure i am able to afford it).

I think maybe i was a bit haste with my decision as i was gagging to get an impreza, i didn't realise the nature of the RA, i find its not to comfortable driving on the motorway, loud and hungry, it just feels like when in 5th gear it could do with another 2 gears, it seems to be chopping at the bit to go up, also very deceptive as to what speed your doing, i really must pay a lot of attention to my the speedo in this car.

Apart from them gripes am happy with the look, sound and performance, i need to get used to the car as i drove a golf tdi for about 5 years this will take some getting used to.

I did happen to hit the throttle a little to hard this morning in work car park (which was empty) maybe a little deliberate and it spun like a good one on the snow.

They are a tad "uncomfortable" on motorway journeys. Far too low geared for any long distance driving I find.

That said, that's not what they are about. Mine's on a trackday at the beginning of April & I can't wait!!

I love mine :)

no doubt they are sweet cars, i am remaining open minded on the subject for the moment caught between a rock and hard place at moment.

I also have an MY99 UK with a TEK 3 remap by BRD.

It's a far better car on the motorway, but the RA a much better & faster car overall.

My pleasure. Start trawling through this lot:

In simple terms, the lower the final drive - the lower top speed but the quicker you get there. If you think your gearing is challenging then spare a thought for the early RA owners who had a 3.9 final drive.

If you've got access to any of the Gran Tourismo playstation games you can bugger around with the gearing all day (as I did) and get a good understanding of how it all works.

This lot will give you the figures

Agree SS, the RA is a beast you need to get used to. I bought mine purely for track days but like it so much (when I get the chance to drive it, as my Son uses it more than me!), I have not done a track day yet!

Try to limit the motorway runs as much as I can, but it is a pure joy to leave most cars, including scoobs, in my rear view mirror with the close ratio box

They fly past me though when i top out at circa 118/120....

Russell,

When you "sit him down" and run through "all the usual RA questions" can you post them on here :D

I'm hoping to be up near Aberdeen soon for my Apexi PFC remap by AndyF. If it makes as much difference to the RA as the BRD TEK3 remap did to my UK Turbo I'll be a very happy bunny :D :D

You guys need to get your hands on the ra ltd gearbox (I have a v5). 1-4 are the same ratio as the normal ra but 5th is a lot longer. not long enough that you drop off boost but long enough so it is not hunting as much.

Something to bear in mind if you blow your current one up and have to put in a new one.
