Hi i have just bought (today) a 1995 RA which i am going to use for single venue tarmac rallying. I have been rallying for 6 years and decided to get a proper rally car. Just got to sort out the cage, sump guard etc etc then i will be away.

I just read the post on the DCCD and it really cleared up some confusion i was having.
I have heard something about a 5th injector on the RA what is this for and does it exist?
Does any one elso who rallies use this forum? If so is there any advice on prep to do to my car before rallying?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Chris & welcome,

The early RAs had a 5th injector but I have heard conflicting reports over it's function. Some say it is non functioning (if this is true what's the reason for it being there?) & I've also heard it's used purely for cold starts!!

Hopefully some "guru" will straighten this out.

The guy who fixes my car rallies an Impreza, if you have any specific questions let me know & I'll ask.

I am in the process of converting my v5 sti ra into a tarmac rally car.

The basic rules to comply with the equivalent of group n rally in australia is the following

Full weld in roll cage. Must be FIA certified and engineered. THis is a lot simpler than it seems because there are some companies that have been to the expense of having it properly certified and you (or your workshop just buy a kit and weld it all up). They provide all the documentation. I stripped my car completely before it went for the cage and as a wild ballpark the total cost will be about aud$5500. You have two options with your cage. You can have cold drawn seemless or chrome moly. The chrome moly is lighter but is harder to repair and a lot dearer.

We must also have non reclineable seats. THey are also not allowed to be on sliding rails. I.e. able to move back and forth.

You must also have a proper harness for both the passenger and the driver. The original seat belts are not deemed to be good enough. These have to be tagged etc aswell.

The computer is free.

Unless you are complying fully with group n specs you are free to run whatever exhaust you desire (obviously it needs to meet local track sound requirements). The other advantage with tarmac is that you dont need to run the 34mm restrictor on the air inlet that basically limits you to about 220kw.

I have gone right through all this and there are other requirements in terms of licensing (both the car and the driver). If you want any more information please let me know.

Cheers

The fifth injector came out on the initial run of RA's it is not seen on anything from v3 onwards - MY97 to present. The function of the fifth injector was cold start priming , but this was only available if your car had the correct ecu to drive it which was not on every RA equipped with the injector - tuning via aftermarket computers of the fifth injector is not recommended as its been found that the A/F ratio cannot be 100% accurately tuned. Hope that helps.

This is also what I was told.

also consider homologation purposes. subaru can then use this for eg. water inj point. the apexifc fitted to my car does not control this,BUT i have attached a bypass switch to it for use on overun

Hi Chris, how's the build going!
The wheels you got from me look good!
When are you out next.
The 5th injector can be used for Water Injection ( NOT WATER SPRAY ), this is a good thing as it keeps the charge temps down and is sprayed directly into the inlet manifold as close to the IC as pos and is controlled by an after market ECU ( gems, motec etc ).

URABUS, We have to run aither a 32mm or 34mm restictor on all turbo charged cars over here in the UK, it is part of the MSA regs ( section K ).

the port for the fifth injector can also be used to pic up a few ponies at top end if kept as an injector (replace with better one) as you can use this injector to spray at high air velocity (rpm's) and it will make for better air fuel mixture at high speed to help with the stockers...also beneficial if you are topping out the stockers ;)
I know this is how Bozz uses their's...
and I'm doing on my formula SAE (student) engine build...
