I am planning on heading back to the promised land my birth place a remote scottish island with lots of nice curvey roads with no coppers or cameras the joy. Just a week long visit but plan on having some fun.
I have a sneaky feeling that optimax is not available, nor bp ultimate, i having it checked out now for me.
i have had one tank of ultimate in car since i got it, as the dealer left it on vapours and it was the only stuff around, ran well enough, since then i have used optimax no OB just plain optimax.
my question is as follows, should i go up there and there is none of the above will i get away with using super unleaded and OB ? i know SU is available. I know nothing about the mapping of the car, i just know i was told by dealer ultimate or optimax only
my00 wrx RA
help appreciated

You'll be fine on Super and booster. The car will be at it's best running as close to 100 ron fuel as you can get, so by mixing 97ron super unleaded with, for example, a bottle of millers octane plus, you'll bring the ron rating up to around 99 - more than the regular optimax you've currently been using.
The car would probably be fine on normal super as long as you weren't giving it 10/10th's all the time.....but booster is cheaper than engine rebuilds so I wouldn't chance it
Notice you're from Aberdeen....what part? I was a Huntly loon up until a couple of years ago.
Cheers,
Brian.

There may be some "special" prices on Millers OB available soon
Subject to negotiation.

I would definately be interested in this. Do you know roughly when it would be arranged by as I'm close to needing to place an order for another case?

After som seriously damaged STI engines here in Norway after using OB on 98 octane fuel. What type of octane are you guys using? I was wondering about getting a Knock-Link on my RA to prevent any damage to my car? Do I need to? This fuel problems here over the pond are really making me worried... Getting the impression about that these OB's we are using are no good.
Is it really 102 octane JDM engines run on? Or can we use 98 ?
JDM = 100RON
I use 5% methanol as a booster

So in other words, we can use OB and have a safe drive? Where du you get methanol in England? The only thing they use that in Norway is to drink it. (Stupid guys...!)
Better to use it on the car to get a hell of a drive, than to drink it an go blind..
I have an apexi ECU and my car is mapped to run with 3% methanol, I use 5% on trackdays and 10% when drag racing so I can advance the ignition timing and up boost for some extra go.
You would need to make sure all is safe before really going for it on the standard ECU, I would think, try listening through det-cans on part throttle, half throttle and WOT, as long as its quiet through the cans all the time then I see no reason not to push it, knocklink would be a good idea to visibly show det as well, you really must be absolutely certain there is no det before letting down your guard as its easy to det the engine to death quite quickly if the map is way off.
thats the important warning notice, but I know it works for me

Right, I need to re visit this issue as the trip i mentioned is happening but i have found out today that i will only be able to get 95 ron on island.
Here is the query again maybe I can more input all help appreciated. I have posted elsewhere but seem to get more reliable advice here. I will just post the message i have elsewhere here
All
I am traveling soon to a far flung island for a bit of fun in my my00 wrx classic type RA, however i found out today that on this particular island they only ever get 95 ron stuff. I knew they didnt have optimax so was hoping i could use super unleaded with some millers octane plus, this plan is now out the window cause using millers octane plus will only give me 2 ron points bringing it to 97 ron.
My question is can i safely use another octane booster like say something that will boost the ron of standard unleaded up by 4 or 5 points, i have seen these types around but unsure if its safe enough to use with my model of impreza. Also could you recommend a particular high octane booster that would be suitable.
Please help as trip is coming up soon and i need to get things organised.
thanks

SS. Try this:
CVL turbo will increase the octane of commercially available pump fuel by up to 4 RON (40 octane points).
Independent tests have shown that a combination of CVL Turbo and Shell Optimax will give a Research Octane Number (RON) of between 101 and 102 octane.
CVL Turbo provides flame front control to prevent detonation and is suited to all turbo and non-turbo engines where maximum performance is demanded. It will appeal to track day enthusiasts, rally competitors and other forms of competitive motoring where the additional octane is demanded.
CVL Turbo is suitable for occasional use in vehicles fitted with catalytic converters and is compatible with nitrous injection systems. Use Millers Octane Plus for continuous use in catalyst equipped vehicles.

I'm working with a guy who can get a decent price on Millers stuff too, but it's taking a while to get things sorted.
I only live 5 mins from the factory too!

Just a note to anyone who's read Andys post and wants to throw Methanol in on a std computer - be aware you're AFR's will go lean. Unless you have a tunable ecu you wont see the full benifits , stick with your octane booster.
