Having just got my 555 sti RA :D on the road (see new members intro a couple of weeks ago - good DCCD guide!) I have a few questions about the water spray.

1) What sort of water is required? de-ionised/distilled etc
2) Is there any type of anti freeze addition required for the cold winter months?
3) When should the spray be used and for how long?

Any help much appreciated

I've use it straight out of the tap but thinking about it, I guess it would be better to use distilled water as it would stop any furring of the fins especially if you live in a hard water area like I do.

Same sort of anti-freeze as you would use in your washer bottle

Ideally when you require a bit more boost but extended use will not hurt it

There has been some discussion on scoobynet about using an antifreeze agent in ic spray......and generaly that its best to use tap/distilled water only. :)

Anti freeze aint a good idea, its corrosive to paint for one thing and the other thing is that have you ever checked your i/c spray bottle over winter if you have the i/c spray on auto?
Put it this way, ive got a 12ltr water tank in the boot, it was filled up in about october last year, its now april, there is about 11.5ltrs left in there, the other .5ltr useage has been when ive hit the manual i/c spray button, so that should give you an indication of how much its needed in winter ;) but in summer a good run out over a couple of hundred miles can pretty much empty that 12ltrs

Thanks for this. Still a bit puzzled about auto/manual. To the best of my knowledge I just have a push button on the dash. I presumed it was either on / off or just on for a a pre-determined amount of time. Please advise?

STi's should have an auto and a manual I/C button, summer is good for the auto, just click it on, it goes of a couple of factors, engine revs, inlet temps, ecu to determin when its needed, the manual one is just a 1 push button (auto should have a light on when active) and it despenses about 150ml of water each time.

Hi
My wifes 96 v2 sti ra dosn't have auto i/c spray it just has the 3-4 sec burst. From what i've seen i don't think subaru made any 2 impreza's the same!!

My 96 str ra v2 is like that too - only manual, no auto switch - agree with the comments about no two ra's being the same!

me too, i only have the manual i/c spray button.
subaru made the RA's to order - the customer got to specify exactly what they wanted and they had some choice - you could choose anything from 'girly' stuff like rear wash wipe/electric mirrors to 'blokey' stuff like rally style drive systems and steering

That makes me feel better - thought I was missing something. Cheers for the replies.

scoobychick555 - It sounds like your car is identical (as identical as they get) to mine so could you answer these questions please?

1) what is your gearing like, I hear people talking about doing 5000 revs at 70 mph but mine is doing 70 at less than 4000. Still geared different to my old wrx V1 but I don't mind using it on the motorway if I have to.

2) Do you get a ridiculously low mpg?

3) How fast can you go with the roof vent up. There is something in japanese about 80km/h (on the vent) but don't know if this is a warning etc.

Thanks
Chris

chris,

1) gearing sounds about right. mine does 70mph at 4000 rpm

2) dont really get low mpg cos i dont have a heavy right foot.
as an example, on the way back from cardiff after picking up my RA, i used 55 litres to do 400 miles.

3) i only have the roof vent open if i'm pootling about the town at around 30mph. have been told not to open it if i am going faster than 50mph as it will blow off! which is probably what the warning in japanese is saying :D

Hi

I've done 90mph with the vent open without problems! Don't know if i should have but it didn't appear to damage it. After all if you were in a rally you wouldn't want to keep opening and closing it would you???

The auto i/c sprays were not introduced until the MY97 models.

Before then they were all manual.

Could you please let me know where the IC water spray "tank" is located in the car? I had the car repaired recently and I found out the the IC spray function no longer works.
