So after 8 years of scooby ownership,3 imprezas to date i finally managed to blow one up
Noticed the knocklink flash red a couple of times whilst accelerating of a roundabout,so eased off a bit and heard what sounded like a load of spanners in the engine compartment.
I pulled over to investigate and all seemed fine on tickover, untill i gave the throttle cable a tugg, and the spanners came back!!
Luckily i was only a minute from the house so crawled back ......Gutted :x
Was not too far of having saved enough cash for a nice set of 6 pot ap brakes aswell........looks like there gonna have to wait :(
So now i have to find someone to rebuild my 99 type ra engine as assuming the big ends have failed,or similiar...will give Api engines a ring tomorrow as they come highly regarded on scoobynet/etc
What do you guys think i should do?Go down the 2.5 route or go for a stronger built 2.0(if there is such a thing)as i,m assuming were looking at £2000-£2500 for a rebuild..

Exactly the same thing has just happened to me - although I am lucky to find a running STI 6 replacement engine which all in all will set me back about £1200 fitted.
If a big end bearing has gone (which it sounds like) then you will need a new crank, bearings, conrod and maybe piston (depending on how badly it detted).
A rebuild will cost anywhere from £2k to £3.5k depending where you get it done.
If I were you I would ensure you do two things though - spend a little extra and get an STI 9 crank (which has better oilways) and also an uprated oil pump from Roger Clark or Graham Goode. Hopefully you will have a more bomb-proof engine then :D
Best of luck - we fitted mine today but it has a slight oil leak from the oil cooler connections - so should be back in it toimorrow evening.
Cheers
Terry :D

Try TEGSport at Carnforth as they rebuilt my bottom end (so to speak) and modified the oil pump whilst doing it and cost £1200.00 plus the VAT.
Never missed a beat since...

may i ask out of curiousity what the usage of your car was like?

Bad news mate :(
There does seem to be a bit of a pattern emerging with the V5/6 going bang.
Hope you get it sorted soon, but if you need any help I know a man who can - and does it at a resonable price.

John,
Don't TEGSport do Apexi remapping too?
Is it Steve Simpson?

Sorry to hear this mate.
Does anyone REALLY know why these things happen?
Souds like you treat yours like a baby & keep up to servicing etc.
Are the imports really so prone to these kind of failures?
If so what parts are to blame?
Cheers

Sounds like you are near Zen Performance. Have a look here http://www.zenperformance.co.uk/
BLOODY HELL!
Am I the only one whos car is running high power with no engine issues?
This is getting scary. Just as well the new engine is already at the house. Just need to build it up over the winter months!

Right, have finally got enough dosh saved for rebuild..after many different enquiries with various companys it was a toss up between Api engines and Zen performance.Who both responded with the best info on what i required. You,d be amazed how many companies didn,t even reply to emails.
Anyway, decided to go with Pavlo at Zen as he is nearer to me,and the total cost was slightly less than Api.
So going for the cross drilled sti9 crank, forged rods and pistons etc.
These components will be more than adequate for the power that i will eventually be aiming for using the already sourced td05 18g..
Just not looking forward to running it in :?
Soon to be back terrorizing the tarmac...no 639/1000

O.k finally got her back on the road......have allready clocked up 600miles in 2weeks(probably the most it has ever done)so not too much more before its run in.
Engine looks really sweet and clean with powder coated manifold etc..
Must say a big thanks to Zen performance for the work carried out, and would definately recomend the team to anyone looking for an outfit to care for there pride and joy..
Spec is as follows
Wiseco forged pistons
Tomei H-section conrods
Sti version 9 crank
Acl bearings
Modified oil pump
Modine oil cooler
Good for 450 bhp!!!!
Zen also carried out some extra work on block where oil pressure sender had been bodged, basically ally welded......and didn,t even charge any extra...
Have had plenty of time to source some tuning bits whilst car was off road ...so by next summer it should be good for close to 400 hp.
Can,t wait :D

Hey guys any update or info here?
I was told the original Type RA engine (version 1) is very strong.
Am I wrong in thinking that or are the old EJ20's not as tough as we thought?

Sorry for the bump but for those of you who have had an engine failure or know of others, did you guys have any mods are up the boost?

There really is no set reason as to why an engine will let go.
I have had and run standard internal engined cars at 1.4 boost for years and never had any problems, one of those cars had 90k miles on when I sold it and 6 months on with another 5k on the clock it is still going strong (and the guy drives it like a twat).
I have customers with low mileage cars with no mods that have let go for no apparent reason.
If the engines time is up, it is up :( and there will be nothing you could do or have done to prevent it whether it is 25k miles 50k or 100k, apart from, and, YES, it has all been said before,
VERY REGULAR
MAINTENANCE;)

Thanks WhiteRAman
I'm just a little scared since I would be purchasing the car through auction direct from Japan
I sure I don't end up with a dead engine once I find the right car (at least I think it will be right lol).
I'll definitely maintain it but as you said I guess we better hope the previous owner(s) maintained the engine well!
