Is there a key to allow the original double din headunit to be removed.
Also do I need a double din adapter or can I fit my single din headunit in and then a gauge pod above it without the need for any other bit of kit?

I didn't need a key. I removed mine by undoing the plastic trim around the gear stick (and gaitor) up to cup holders. With access to a few more screws the entire centre section withdrew. The double din was screwed to the metal cage centre section. With these removed I screwed new stereo to the bottom and placed/screwed a halfords single din cd pocket. Obviously you will be using boost gauges + mount. Note the cage of the new stereo would be too wide so screwed directly to main body (ensure bolts/screws not too long) Good luck not a difficult job

There is a guy on eBay who does the adaptors.
I fit one on mine & it's fine.
Gives you an extra pocket or, as you say, you could fit some gauges.

Thanks guys,
I've just removed it and fit a single din mp3 and fitting 3 smoked 360 degree autogauge gauges above it.
Looks nice and neat.
I got a few bits to do here and there and then I'll submit some pix
One thing I did get off ebay was the wiring harness that clips straight into the OEM wiring and then my head unit plugged into that, no need for snipping the cables. Only paid around a fiver too.
