View Full Version : GEAR BOX CRUNCH AT HIGH REVS IN 4th

Hi,
Does anyone know of any problems with changing gear in 4th at high revs?
All the other gears on my car seem fine at any rev range. But 4th is difficult to get in and there's a slight crunch anywhere over 5,000rpm. I've checked the gear box oil on the dip stick, crystal clear and on the max. But is there another level check? On th ebox itself?
Could it want changing? Or is there a better grade that may resolve it?
Thanks
Rich

Have you had yours fixed yet? If so how much was it?

I had that on my old WRX, slapped a 2nd hand gearbox in...a rebuild IIRC was around £800-1k (may be way off there was a while ago, perhaps someone else can confirm)

It does sound like the synchro is worn.

Mine was similar but it never got worse so I left it.

I'm living with it at the moment, It's at least four hours labour and approx £150 for the bits IIRC.

It might be worth getting fixed if you drop your box or engine for anything, but otherwise I'd just live with it mate, it's not that bad, definitely not worth 4 hours labour!!!!

Interesting, mine does this from 2nd to 3rd at high revs, however it never does it down changing form 4th to 3rd which is when you would expect a
crunch if syncro was worn.

I would have imagined that 3rd would be the gear that got the wear not 4th.

I intend to try and live with mine. It's not a massive crunch.

Is this an additive to the gear oil or is this another kind of the last.

I had a similar issue after my last oil change but it was crunchy/notchy into all gears. I added a tube of Nulon Manual Gearbox & Diff. Treatment (G70) and it got a lot better.

I still get the odd notch or crunch every now and then but nowhere near as bad as before.

Well worth a try before forking out to remove the box.

shock oil is a replacement.. gotta drain it and fill it.. its made by redline, this is a copy and paste off there site..

Heavy ShockProof® A unique lubricant containing a suspension of solid microscopic particles as an extreme pressure agent--unique solid dispersion which cushions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities.

Recommended for heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, Off Road racing and problem gearboxes. The viscosity characteristics allow the lubricant to resist throwoff and provide a film thickness similar to a 75W250 grade, while providing the same low fluid friction as an SAE 75W90.

I intend to try and live with mine. It's not a massive crunch.Once I've driven my mate's v2 sti type-ra and it was exactly the same, shifting up from 2nd to 3rd was crunchy, but all the other changes, no matter if up or down, were no problem at all... He just got used to that and AFAIK it was not fixed yet, 'cause it's not getting worse
btw. every subaru box has one poor gear... seems to be a rule
