Hi all scooby m8:ts. Got my Impreza Wrx RA early 1996 remapped yesterday again, and everything was great(did 335 bhp on 1.23 bar). Later that day the crankshaft went thru the block, the worst thing that could happen when its nice weather and you have spend x100 hours all winter on the car. Got me really sad.
So now I need a new engine. Can you please give me some detailed info about this. What is the difference with the Wrx RA shortblocks, and WRX, or Sti? Is it any difference? Could I buy a 97-99 Wrx Sti engine, and fit it without any problems (Thinking of turbo, ECU, wireness and so on..
I must get some more knowledge about what I can do. If I only buy a low mile shortblock, wich will fit the car.
I have little problems with my english, but I hope you guys can help me and share your great knowledge.
Cheers Jimmy, Sweden

What you need is a Version 1/2 closed deck block with a version 9 crank, forged rods and pistons, race bearings, modified oil pump, ARP stud kit and the engine will be good for 500+ hp.
The gearbox however is a different story;)

This one looks like a V3/V4 engine.
Has your engine got seperate coil packs or a coil pack in the centre of the inlet manifold ?
If your engine has got separate coil packs then you will have to remove the inlet manifold from your engine and put it on this new one, if you already have the central coil pack then it will be a straight forward swap over without removing the manifold.
Either way the actual engine part will fit staright into your car.

Thanks alot m8.
I asked the company that sold it how many horsepowers it was, and they said:
250bhp. This cant be correct?
I really cant find difference between the different versions. Some on ebay sell
EJ20 from Japan 92-99, but how shall you know what engine it is:

This is strange :). Can you sort it out?

I have had a closer look at the picture in the 1st e-bay link you sent and have decided that is NOT an Impreza engine.
It has an early (version 1/2) inlet manifold but a later (version3/4) header tank.
It has a version 1/2 dump valve.
I think this engine is a MY95/96 Legacy engine.
If you want to get a g/teed low mileage engine from a good supplier that offersa 12 month warranty and will sell you the correct engine then look here:

and tell him Ralph from Milsport put you in contact with him.

Thanks alot m8.
Whats should be me best option.
I can get hold of a Wrx Sti v2 or 4 complete used engine. I also cant get hold of some Wrx engine same years.
The hardest question that Im dying to know about is:
Would the Sti v2 or v4 fit into my Wrx RA Early 96? Or should it be a major conversion..
Its tempting to chose a Sti becouse Im going to drive with about 330-340 bhp (Like i did before the crash)
And what I have resourced, the Sti engine would suit me better for that power (When its only some 100 pounds in different) for the used engine
This questions would be impossible to find out without this great forum.
Thanks again :)

ALL the classic engines (version 1 - 6) will fit your car.
If the STi engine is only £100 more then go for that one.
I think your car has the Version 1-2 engine in it so the best choice would be the STi version 2 engine, that way everything should be the same and a straight swap over job.
