Hi guys

I've been offered a swap. An STI Type RA and a Supra for my Escort Cosworth. I've had my cossie for ages now and would like a change, but am a bit wary about swapping. I've not seen the car yet and obviously wouldn't agree without seeing first. Its a version 3, silver, with £1300 AP racing brakes, dccd, roof vent, stainless exh, 1997 P plate and is in mint condition. Its done around 80,000kms (50,000miles?). My Cossie needs a bit of work body wise and is running more or less standard. What should i be looking for when i look at the car? What paper work should be present with the documents? Any problem areas that i should look at? How should it drive? and finally what value do you rekon the RA would be worth based on the info i've given.

Lots to think about and any help and advice you guys can give would be greatly appreciated. :D

If it's silver it's had a respray. The RA was never available in silver in the GC8 (classic) shape.

Paperwork will probably be missing the early info from Japan, these tend to get lost. You need to see the VIN plate to be sure the car is what it says it is. Its on passenger side front suspension tower.

Check out if the car has an aftermarket ECU. From 98 the Japs had 100 RON fuel but many of the earlier ones are modded.

Unseen, I'd say about 3.5 - 3.7K for the car. But being silver it must have been painted so will devalue it.

Cheers

Wow, cheers. :D A big help. Wasn't sure what to look for and must admit the respray is putting me off a bit now. Will speak to the guy and see what he says re this.

Any feed back is still appreciated.

If you can get the applied model code from the VIN plate we can tell you what the car is. For an MY 97 STi Type RA it should be GC8D4DD

BTW,

Much as I love the RAs, I'd have an Escort cossie anyday.........

Really depends on the condition of the cars, a near standard escort cosworth is a pretty rare find anyway... might be worth something to a collector.

If the Supra is a manual twin turbo, in good condition with history... then it's verging on a fair swap.

The Supra is manual but the non-turbo model. I've asked the guy if the RA has had a respray but he says definately not but he is not the first owner. He is going to send the vin plate details to me along with some pics so I will post them if i can and you guys can have a look.

Thanks again for the input.

If it has not had a respray then it is NOT a RA, it will be an "ordinary" scoob with roof vent etc added after.
Is it a 2 door/4 door ? where is the aerial ? (O/S "A" pillar or N/S rear 1/4), has it got rear wash wipe ? Has it got dccd? has it got ABS ?, has it got IC waterspray?all of these things will help determine what it actually is, that and the applied model code from the vin plate.

The reason the turbo models with a manual are worth so much more, is due to the fact the gearbox and engine (2jz-gte) are highly sought after.

If your escort is running well and has an MOT, i'd say he's got to put money with it.

Post up some pics of your cosworth as well :D

i would say he needs to put money your way as well. a non turbo supra is still a nice car but you can get one for about 3.5k plus the STI RA for 4.5k but most cossies go for about 12k onwards (in good nick).
Love my STI RA, you will be astonished at the acceleration. But i know the cossie is worth more.

Hi guys

I've been e-mailing the bloke with the questions you've mentioned, ie ABS, aerial position, vin plate details, and hes now not responding. Im begining to think he knows its not an RA and is ignoring me.

Thanks for the help and if he does contact me again i'll be in touch.

Ta again for all the help.
