strange noise

hi all. just after some well needed advice, basically when you set off in first gear it makes a clicking noise but when you change to 2nd it stops? it also makes the noise in neutral when the clutch is out and as soon as u put the clutch in it stops? any ideas n info will be most appreciated :cheers:
